  1. Hello! Long time lurker but finally made an account, bought and built a few tools, and ordered a side of rawhide. After braiding up a lariat core loping hackamore in the style of a bosal I am ready to make the jump to the real thing. My plan is to make all the braided gear for my young mares progression to the bridle. So, my question! I bought a side of rawhide from OA Leather Supply, it's a 3-4 oz Rawlings Tennessee Tanning Co. Will I be able to get thick enough strings out of this to braid a decent core? The mare is soft soft soft in that loping hack already so she doesn't need a stiff core. If not, what thickness should I be looking for? Most that I'm finding for sale are 3-5 oz sides and I don't want to buy a bunch yet since I'm brand new. Unfortunately I don't have the ability to do my own rawhide right now but I do want to in the future! I should add that I'm in Canada, so importing anything myself from down south is out of the cards right now unfortunately. Thank you for any tips and tricks you're willing to share, this forum has been an excellent source of info so far! N
