Pete, Once again thanks for the advice and pointers, that's a really neat trick, filling the holes with cotton, gotta try that. One last question, in your opinion, will LEXOL do the same thing as neatsfoot oil as that is what I have on hand and if not I will just have to pick up some neatsfoot oil. Penden, Terry, and Pete I really appreciate the responce and advice, I am sorry it took this long to get back to ya'll, I do have one more question which is when doing an oak leaf belt using the lifting technique what type of finish do I use in order to maintain the lift, and also at what point or step do you preform the lifting? I tried lifting during the tooling process but my problem is I have to relift after dying, and again after each step I do, if that makes any sense to you, again I really appreciate any and all help and advice, thanks CHARLES.

Hello All, Being new to leather working I spend a lot of time reading and looking on this forum, but the more I read the more confused I get. I need some guidance on the proper sequence or steps for finishing my projects, tooling then dye then oil then antique then finish of choice, or tool then oil then dye, antique and finish. I also would like to know what finish is compatible with what dye and or antique. Also I have a question about two layer belts, do they need to be glued up flat or on some type of round or oval form? Any and all help, advice, or pointers would really be appreciated, thanks in advance, CHARLES.

JLS, thanks for the info, I will have to order some of both as I like the idea of the shiny finish, I wonder what the results would be on something like a belt with the lifting technique, would the lifted areas stay lifted during normal wearing? Thanks again, CHARLES

I pulled up a pic of a Pro Petal Lifter on the enternet and went to the shop and made a couple different sizes out of stainless welding rods, just a thought, CHARLES. Ground and polished them they work great, I was impressed, CHARLES

I have just finished my first oak leaf carving using the lifting method on the inside curves. My problem is when dying and buffing, and finishing, antiquing or what ever you have to go back and relift everywhere. I guess I should have started out telling ya'll that this carving is on a checkbook cover and you will be responding to a real newby. Now for my question, what to finish the project with and would airbrushing be the way to go. And would the lifting hold up what with being shoved in and out of a purse? Any help and or advice would be greatly appreciated. Also if airbrushing is required for finishing what kind of airbrush kit would I need, I already have a compressor, thanks CHARLES.

ABN, Hidepounder, Thanks for the replies, input, and info. I like the unfinished look myself but did not know if it was really cosher, I have several store bought and flea market belts with the backsides finished and I don't like the way it cracked and looks ugly. I have really enjoyed reading on this site, and am really enjoying this brand new hobby, wish I had started it years and years ago. With Ya'lls help I just might learn something even at my age lol. I have now made two belts but I need some help or info about finishes, I cannot find anything about finishing the backside of the belt or what to use if anything, any info or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance, CES.
