This is an eBay auction for a Vergez Blanchard stitching clam. It is approximately 4'3" tall and has 2 1/2" jaws.
The jaws are lined in sheepskin to protect the product being created.
I also have added a little white rope to provide tension to the jaws while stitching, it was not included from Vergez. I used the clam while standing and letting the clam rest against a workbench.
It was damaged in shipment, but was professionally repaired by a wood specialist.
Let me tell you the trial I had to endure to get this clam from Vergez. No US importer that I am aware of carries this clam.
Vergez's website is only in French and my email queries in English were not answered. I wanted one anyways, so I placed my order and the website suddenly sprang to life with customer service. I placed my order and since there is a 100 euro minimum order, I picked up a few other tools. This clam cost about 67 euros (US$91). Shipping was another 38 euros (US$50).
About a 10 days later I received my package. The cardboard box was bent at the top. I opened it to find one of the clam's jaws completely broken off about 3" from the top.
Knowing that my chances of good customer service at Vergez were minimal, I consulted a local wood furniture specialist. He did an amazing job at repairing and restoring the strength to the clam. He added two wood dowels to the piece, but otherwise, I cannot tell there was ever any damage. There is no creaking or hint of structural problem. I have created three small leather cases with the clam and it works seamlessly.
It is an exceptional professional tool and if I were still in the leather trade, I would not sell it.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
