Redders

I'm in the process of teaching myself how to do differing things with leather. One project i'm currently working on, is leather sword knots. I'm trying to work out how the leather acorns are constructed. This picture shows a Leather Acorn I can see what looks to be like a Wooden core? Is this hollowed at the top to accept the sword knot strap? How is the braiding attached to the acorn? If anyone has any ideas, tips or experience with these, i'd be grateful for any advice.
