  1. I hope you folks can help me out here. I've stitched a few holsters together with embroidery floss( I know its not proper, but it's all I had at the time.) Yesterday I went to Tandy and got some waxed nylon thread for hand stitching, but I've had a heck of a time getting any needles threaded with it. What type of needles should I be using with this thread? I assume they will have a slightly larger than normal eye, seeing as the thread is thicker than regular cotton thread. Checking ST Leather's website they have Harness needles, Gloves needles, and regular stitching needles. Which one will work with the nylon thread? Thanks in advance for your help. Eric
  2. Hi all! I am just finishing up a couple pancake holsters and have a question about neatsfoot oil. I followed hidepounder's guide to finishing edges and then put neatsfoot oil on the leather, and the edges had a few light spots where it wouldn't take it right away. I didn't use any edge dye because I don't have any at the moment. Should I oil the leather and the edges before I burnish? Eric
  3. I am trying to burnish the edges of my holsters, but do not have any gum tragcanth. I have Howards Feed N Wax, which is bees wax, carnauba wax and orange oil. Will this work? I have tried using a scrap piece of leather to burnish, but I have access to a dremel with smooth shafts as well. Will neatsfoot oil work? I also have a brick of beeswax I can use, but should it be heated to liquefy it or used as is? Eric
  4. Thank you very much for the quick reply, it is much appreciated. Eric
  5. I am working on my first pancake holster for a revolver and I have a question about molding the leather. Should I wet mold the leather before or after cutting the belt slots? Thanks. Eric
  6. Hello, my name is Eric and I just joined the forum today. I made my first leather holster yesterday, and like everything I do, I am now "reading the directions" (so to speak) after assembly:) Anyway, the main reason for joining the forum was to gain information and advice on making leather holsters. I like quality made products just as much as the next guy, but I am a do-it-yourselfer and like to save money if I can. Luckily, there is a Tandy Leather Factory outlet about 45 minutes away, and I went and picked up a half shoulder today for $19. I am in the process of making a pancake holster for my Taurus 85 and I'll post pics when it's finished. Here's my pocket holster: It was made from some leather that was "re-purposed" as you can tell, and it has its previous stitch holes and what not. It sure aint pretty, but so far it works well! I look forward to many more holsters in the future. I think I am really going to enjoy this new hobby! Eric
