I am new and still learning. I did a search for this title and did not come up with anything. I am not sure if all water proofing applies eaqually or if different types of leather have different procedures. I have a couple sides of chrome tanned cow hides. They are about 8 oz in thickness. I love the stuff. It is extremely tough and pliable for the thickness. I would like to make a bag out of it and need to have it water proofed as much as possible. How do I do this? I got a box of scrap veg tan leather the other day. I needed it to practice with. In the box was some what looks like 7-8 oz black veg tanned leather. The only problem is that it is tougher than anything I have ever seen. I can barely cut through it with a freshly sharpened knife. I have had 14 oz cut way easier. Is this possibly packed leather? I have read in old books that the shoe industry used to pack leather with fillers and then compress it in order to create a better sole leather out of inferior leather. Is there a product like that being made today? Is it possible that I have something like that and what is it called if I do?

What grind do these knives have on them? Flat, Scandi, Convex?

I am new to serious leather working and recently bought a pull type skiver. After 2 hours of playing with it and adjusting it (a little filing) I got it to work beautifully. I can taper 8 oz down to nothing and make it flat and pretty. The problem is that I picked up some 8 oz chrome tanned leather that is soft and I am having a hard time skiving it. I can get about half way through and then I can not get it to cut any longer. Is there a trick to skiving chrome tanned leather?
