We checked and it looks to be threaded correctly and the needle is in with the long groove to the left. It will start to sew for a couple of stitches and then it jams up with thread down by the bobbin. Any other thoughts

We just bought a Consew 226R for sewing leather horse tack. We bought a leather needle (135x16 #21) and the recommended thread (138). We sewed some with the machine when we first got it home and it sewed good. When we put the new needle and thread on it would not stitch and would jam up. Any help would be appreciated.
