I am looking to find someone that teaches others how to do leatherwork. I have NEVER done it. I have always had the interest, but never followed through. I am now in a time where I want to learn. I am also looking to learn the tools, and what is best to purchase for long-term use. I don't mind spending a little more to get quality tools, but don't want to be buying them...just to have them sit around.

  1. What should be the first few things done when learning this craft? What tools are a necessity? Where do you find quality tools? What tools should I not worry about? What kind of work area is best suited for this, and can I set something up in my house?

you can't go wrong if you master the basic Lucky 7 tools and the handbook. Most of the other tools are variations of the Lucky 7. I taught myself 50 years ago using these tools and gradually added more as my skills improved. If you haven't yet decided which techniques to try have a look at my website http://myleatherwork.com where I have posted examples with instructions on do it yourself. TapTaptap

I have a workshop in my basement. I made my table out of 2x4s and 2x6s and carriage bolts. Since I live in Indiana I topped my table with a 3 inch slab of limestone. I have quite a few Barry King tools, but still use several tandy tools that I use for background stuff. There are many great lessons here at this website and online. This is a great place to learn.
