What is the thinnest leather to be tooled?

I'm brand spanking new to leather crafting. I bought a starter kit with patterns and projects, the first set of instructions tells what to do with the swivel knife. When I get to the next pattern it doesn't. Question, do I cut all of the traced lines on the pattern, like I did in the first project.
