Does anyone have any example photos of old Spanish or Mexican leather carving that they could post. All I could find on google is contemporary stuff.

I am working on developing some patterns for carving based on older designs. I am trying to do something different than Tandy designs, or Sheridan style designs. I like some of the older Mexican styles. I have found a very unique style that I am sure I pilfered from this site on another. I have attached an image of the style, and am curious what this might be called. Does anyone know where I might find some more examples of this? If this is your work, I apologize for not giving credit, but I can't remember where I found it. Also, I would love to see some photos of older/historic designs. Thanks in advance. Oz

I am in need of some inspiration people and think I could use some input. I need to make a new belt for myself. I plan on making a tapered belt with tooling, but I also want to do some inlay work. I have some ostrich remnants, and would like to inlay some of them into the belt. I have drawn out some ideas of my own, and just can't come up with anything that really lights my fire. I am asking for folks to post some of their belts that have unique inlays that they wouldn't mind me using. I am looking for something in a western style. Thanks for any help. Oz

Randypants, I think all they do is letters, and probably some flourishes. This type of type is primarily for fancy printing like wedding invitations. You might e-mail them though. They were very helpful, and fast. Cheers, Oz

I just wanted to post my experiences here. I had a client request a folio with a couple of Bible verses on the inside. I did not think my carving skills would allow me to hand carve the verses, and knew it would be almost impossible to do with the Tandy stamps. I followed stelmacr's link, and had a plate made by these folks. http://www.amanopress.com/ He was running a special, and it only cost me $32.00 shipped to Texas. I need a way to carry my tools for a couple of reasons. Right now I do not have a dedicated bench, so I need a way to carry my tools to the counter where I work temporarily, and the back to the storage area when Momma needs the space. I also need to carry them to workshops, and on vacation, but not traveling by airlines. It does not need to lock. I want to carry my head knife, a few knives, and edgers, my maul, sewing accessories, and my stamping tools. I want everything to be secured,and not banging around too much. What are your collective thoughts regarding a single hole in a block for each tool vs large holes for groups of stamps? I think I'd really like to build something out of wood.

Thanks for the replies folks. Bearman, That's really the direction I am looking. Those toolboxes are not cheap, but I know what it takes to make one. At that price they are priced pretty well. I like the way they look. The tackle box idea is a good one, but I think I want something made out of wood, or leather. Builderodstuff, how do you handle your stamping tools? Please keep the ideas coming. I really appreciate everyones input.

Ok, So here is the situation. I have actually progressed in my leather working journey to the point that I need a new way to carry my tools, and a place to store them. I have been using a couple of wooden cigar boxes to store my tools in, but that has multiplied into 4 seperate boxes, and none large enough for my maul. In the past I have seen everything from simple leather rolls through ornate wooden chests. My questions is for those that have solved the issue with experience. What do you use to store and transport your tools? Ideally I would love to see photos of how you solved this issue. In my mind I would like to build something, but would rather not reinvenmt the wheel. I'm sure the collective intellegence, and experience here will have some great ideas. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what you mean by a resist, but here is what I did to finish. First I wait until the leather is almost dry after tooling, and I burnish with canvas. Next I apply pure neatsfoot oil, and let that dry for about 30-45 minutes. I let that dry, and burnish again with the canvas. Finally I apply Tankote with wool, and let that dry. and buff with fresh wool. I usually use a product called Drake X1 Leather dressing between the oil step, and the Tankote. I use this instead on an antique step. My wife wanted something a little lighter, so I omitted the X1.

Hello all, I am working on a Bible cover, and want to use a meander stamp for the borders. I think I have figured out how to run the stamp, but I am confused on how to make a corner. The corners are not radiused. The stamp is a craftool D4779. I could possibly make some sort of corner decoration and end the stamp there, but i'm not sure what to use. Could anyone post some ideas, or better yet, some photos of how you do this? Thanks for your help.
