Hi,
I am new to the forum and also new to leather sewing. My husband and I found a nice old singer 29-4 for pretty short money on craigslist the other day and have spent the last 3 days cleaning her up and trying to make a stitch. We hope to repair motorcycle seats among other leather projects. Today has produced a fairly good stitch, but one problem bothers me. After completing the stitch and raising the foot lever, the thread will not pull through like it does with my more modern singer. We have to work together to manual pull the thread down before being able to pull out enough thread to cut it off. I hope this makes sense. I have watched some of the youtube videos and one component I am wondering about is the thread retaining spring on the side of the needle holder. The thread goes underneath it I presume and it seems to be causing the bind. Any thoughts??? Also, any search suggestions?? when I put "29-4" into the search engine, nothing comes up. I know some of you are familiar with the 100 year old machines. I am sure I will be in need of much more help as I continue working with this machine!! Thank you!!
