  1. Howdy, I have been making goods in alligator for a little while and have stepped it up to dyeing crusts. Just received my first full crust and as expected - it is much stiffer than finished skins. I have been searching for a while and cannot find a good answer on how to soften these skins to get the temper closer to finished alligator. The tanneries don't offer any specific advice. I know not to use products like Neatsfoot or petroleum based oils - and it seems lanolin is the treatment of choice - but I have not seen instructions on what to do. Do I just rub in raw lanolin? Use a lanolin based conditioner? Appreciate any advice and proven approaches. Thank you Sean
