Hilly Report post Posted November 6, 2007 I went to a local company that makes marble and granite counter tops, and asked if they had any scrap pieces that would fit my needs. They gave me 2 polished granite cutouts from sinks for free. Each piece is about 14"x 17" oval by 2" thick. How cool is that?

Funny thing is, I called there before, and aked if they had any small pieces or scraps, they told me they don't save the scraps from jobs. I stopped in there today, and they had only just finished cutting the sink openings for a job, and were about to put the cutouts on a truck headed for wherever it is that they dispose of the waste rock. It must have been my lucky day. Now I have an extra piece to share if someone wants it.

Thank you for the suggestion! Brent
JohnD Report post Posted November 22, 2007 There is a granite countertop place local to me that puts all their scraps in a big pile out back, when the pile gets big enough a big truck comes and hauls it away. I stopped in one day and asked about it and they let me "help myself". One piece I grabbed was about 3'x3' and another was around 2.5' x 4'. I actually went back the other day and grabbed another smaller piece to use for a portable work surface. The hardest part was finding pieces that weren't all dinged up on the surface, as they just toss the scraps on the pile. If anyone lives in the Northwood, NH area the place is right on Rt 4, although you may have to clear some snow to find what youy need.
wolvenstien Report post Posted November 22, 2007 Most places like that are more than happy to have some one come by and get what they want, because they have to pay by weight to dispose of the scrap.... Monument places and what not too... then you have places like where I got mine, they neatly stack the larger scrap out back and sit on it... I pulled in and the sales guy who came out to greet me showed me a piece that was about 3x2.... when i asked him how much (expecting him to say 100 or so) he asked if I needed the three rough edges rounded and smoothed, when I told him NO, he said 10 dollars... I could not pull the $10 out of my pocket fast enough.... LOL. He even picked it up and put it in my truck for me...
wood Report post Posted November 27, 2007 A buddy of mine went to a monument place one day and they just happened to have a few headstones laying out back that were ordered in the wrong size for what they needed. They gave him 3 of them for $25 and thankfully I came to mind when he was giving them away. Never know what you might find pulling into those places and asking.
