Problem creasing Epsom

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased some Epsom leather for making watch straps and when I tried hot-creasing the edges, it burned/melted the surface even at a very low temperature. Is this normal for specialty leathers like Epsom or is this a sign the leather may not be the best quality?
