How to Preserve Vintage Gilded Stamp

I picked up this vintage folding ruler, that I take with me to hardware stores and such, to confirm measurements.  The gilded stamping about the automatic coal stokers adds real character, but I don't want it to wear away.  Is there a shellac or other finish that will protect it from wear?
