Members MClark Posted Sunday at 09:47 PM Members Report Posted Sunday at 09:47 PM Is there a special technique for threading the needle with Meisi Superfine Linen thread. It is wound very tight. I've been slightly unraveling the thread to puncture it with the needle tip to set it up for sewing. It seems very difficult to work with. My needle size and type is not the problem; it is the thread tightness. Perhaps there is a different method out there. Let me know how you do this. Thanks, Mark Clark Quote
AEBL Posted Sunday at 10:59 PM Report Posted Sunday at 10:59 PM I have some really tightly wound linen thread. Threading it through the needle isn't super hard, but piercing the thread is a bit challenging. I use some jeweler magnifiers to help me see what I am doing, and I do slightly untwist the thread and then try to stab the blunt needle through the linen. It is challenging. For poly thread I use two piercings, but for linen, I just use one, because it is such a pain in the rear to accomplish it. Quote
Members MClark Posted Sunday at 11:17 PM Author Members Report Posted Sunday at 11:17 PM I have been doing the unraveling too. But it seems time consuming and 3-4 piercings seem necessary to keep the thread from coming loose from the needle. It seems another method is needed for this kind of thread. I haven't found anything about this topic on YouTube either. Quote
AEBL Posted 19 hours ago Report Posted 19 hours ago After you pierce the thread, how much of a "tail" is left over? I'm using 0.6 mm linen thread and leave about an inch (2.5 cm) of "tail" to prevent it from completely unraveling. Quote

Members zuludog Posted 14 hours ago Members Report Posted 14 hours ago For years I repaired tents, rucsacs and so on with the usual fabric type thread and pointed needles and just a simple fold over for the thread When I became interested in leatherwork I went on a day's course and was shown how to pierce and lock on the thread, and I also followed that method from YouTube Videos. Then one day I was about half way through sewing a knife sheath or something and I realised - Oh, I haven't pierced the thread. But I didn't want to change part way through a job so I just carried on to the finish, and it seemed to work OK That was a few years ago and I've continued to not pierce the thread, just doing a simple fold over and it works well enough on both polyester and linen thread; and I haven't had any complaints about my stitching. I wax the thread in the usual way and the needle doesn't slide off the thread, so I'll carry on without piecing the thread. Quote
Members MClark Posted 14 hours ago Author Members Report Posted 14 hours ago Folding over isn't gonna help with this stuff. The thread is rock hard and resists piercing like no other thread I have used. Quote
