woolfe Report post Posted January 21, 2009 Hi, This is my first attempt at leather working. I need a little more practice at wet molding, I left some marks in areas I didn't want them. I used 8 -9 oz leather from Tandy, I know it's to heavy I just wanted to give it a shot anyways since it was all I had at the time. I have some 6-7 oz in the mail. I left 3/8th " between my stitching and the gun outline which made the holster just a little to tight. It took a lot of work to get the gun in and out of it. I used Fiebings USMC black from Tandy. For some reason I had areas of the leather that do not want to be dyed, you can still see the speckles of the natural leather color even after 4 coats of dye. Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I start my next holster. Thanks for your time!!! Woolfe
Tac Report post Posted January 21, 2009 (edited) Wow! For a "first attempt" you definately have done much better than most. The Pics look good. I have used that weight leather on several occasions for OWB holsters that are for heavy guns, so there's no problem there.... As far as your "specks" that didn't dye... Usually its due to there being wax on the leather. Either from the waxed thread used to sew the holster or from the tannery. Next time, before you dye the leather, use Iso alcohol on a cotton ball or a sponge and wipe down the leather on the smooth side to help remove the contaminants that can cause issues with the dye. You don't have to soak the leather, just wipe it down. The alcohol will evap quick and not effect the finished color of the leather. Keep up the good work! (Not often you see a "first attempt" on such an advanced design) -Tac Edited January 21, 2009 by Tac
woolfe Report post Posted January 21, 2009 Tac, Thanks! I think you hit the nail on the head as far as the wax getting on the leather, or other contaminants. I was really anxious to get this thing done. I will definately take my time on the next one and make it cleaner and neater.
