Members ArcherBen Posted February 3, 2009 Members Report Posted February 3, 2009 (edited) I'm going to start playing around with some sharkskin for the reinforced mouth bands on my holsters. My question is should the exotic leather be laminated to a piece of veg tan cowhide to produce the proper stiffness for a mouthband, or should I use just the exotic leather? Also, my sharkskin is black processed leather. Should I apply a topcoat over this like I would a piece of veg tan cowhide that I dye myself, or just leave it as is? Randyc Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 I glue then stitch my exotics to a vegetable tanned throat band. If I'm using 8/9 oz. leather for my holster body, I use 6/7 oz. for the throat band. If I'm using 6/7 oz. for a pocket holster, I use 4/5 oz or 5/6 oz. for the throat band. I've found that the vegetable tan throat band is needed for exotics so the band can serve it's intended purpose. Randy Quote
