Frayed01 Report post Posted February 29, 2008 Hi,my name is Dave,I live in the UK,coming back to leather carving after a 10 year lay off. Started leatherwork in 1977,whilst in the Armed Forces,availed myself of the US army facilities whilst in Berlin,kept it up after I left,but due to a 2 hour commute to London and back,every day I let it all lapse. No longer have to commute,and so I'm back. Have just acquired an Adler 30 longarm patcher,free and in working condition,from a friend of my brother who lives in Germany. I am also replacing all my beloved Tandy stamps,which had rusted over the years,win some lose some,and ebay is proving very fruitful at the moment. The only problem we have in the UK,is a lack of places to buy decent veg.tan/tooling leather,but I'm working on that. Thats pretty impresive, not everyone can say that they're triple great grandfather worked in the oldest surviving oak tannery. Are you still in the area? I'm from Bridport in Dorset. I'm from Bridport in Dorset. No,I live in Ashford in Kent,maternal side of the family,come from Devon,Dorset,Somerset triangle,Colyton,Hawkchurch,Thornecombe,by way of Cardiff. I found out about it all when I did the family history, the family working in the tannery were the Larcoombes,who are still in the area. The guys there are great and have really gone out of their way to help me, offering me loads of advice and support. They have a great range and can often order stuff if they dont have it in stock, also their hardware prices are out of this world so I would definitely recommend giving them a shout. Have you tried the BLC? http://www.blcleathertech.com/ They supplied me with a member/product directory that listed members by the type and use of leather, very useful. Also try J.Wood at High Malsis near Keighley, they have over 1/2 million sq feet of leather in stock. Call Gerald on 01535 630006. Will we see you at the Identity Store opening in Northampton? Just forgot to say that I use Abbey Saddlery, they are very helpful, you can open a cash account as a hobby leatherworker (don't need to be a business), sometimes have some thick hides but mainly aimed at English saddle trade, lots of hardware. troy Report post Posted June 6, 2008 Tandy have opened a store in northampton and hold all the stock they sell in the states - 01604 647910. leather solutions on ebay are also good for carving leather, just search for tooling leather.
