Knock Me Down and Call Me Shorty !

Recommended Posts

When was the Wickenburg show?? Less than two weeks ago?!? In today's mail arrived a custom tool I ordered at the show. From Gomph-Hackbarth. There I ordered their custom shell stamp (non-scalloped) in the larger size. Lonnie told me I'd have it in about 3 weeks. (Yeah, haven't we all heard THAT song?) BUT . . . lo and behold, in today's mail, first class postage, the tool arrived.

A second prize was a handwritten letter from Ellis. Now those of us that know him acknowledge he is a bit "curmudgeonly," shall we say? But here was a very nice full-page letter apologizing for past tardiness with a tool order here and there, but grateful to be doing all his life what he loves: making tools. Actually, folks, a charming letter.

Son-of-a-gun! A toolmaker delivering AHEAD of schedule. Yessir, things are lookin' up!!

Yessir, Harvey, guess things are looking up! I was wondering if I could maybe bring a video camera and tape Anne playing w/ your new tool (Ellis Barnes stamp). I bet we could put it on YouTube similar to the way that Keith Valley does. You know, a tutorial, educational.

Uh . . . er . . . well, as we all know some stamps are hard to run. I'm not sure if Anne could, uh, uh, . . . well, you know.

You'all don't start stamping yet. The next flight out of Amarillo to SoCal is not for an hour. Wondering if I could bring my Bob Beard mallet for Anne to try. I'll bring the 64oz. model.

Kev,

Now you're talkin'! Why, you use that 64oz tool of yours and there's no tellin' what things'll look like when you're done. But a warning: I just finished a project using a 64oz tool like you're describing, banging away on a box stamp hundreds of times. Brother, it wears you out!! You ARE familiar with a BOX stamp, right?

:deadsubject: Wow, you just crossed the line! I'm not sure what you're implying. I was just wanting to film an instructional leather tooling video w/ a new Ellis Barnes tool and a 64oz. maul. You then start talking about hitting a box stamp a 100 times with a heavy maul? I hope you know that if you're having to hit the box stamp a 100 times to get a good impression, the leather is too dry. Try adding more moisture. Remember, its not the size of the maul that matters, its the accuaracy in which you hit the tool.

Why, Kev, of what do you speak? With some extensive help from a friend, I tooled a briefcase using a Wayne Jueschke box stamp on the front flap, front and backside. Hundreds of impressions.

What are YOU thinking of?? Myself, I'm simply bewildered.

Kev,

There is a sort of credible witness to this. Harvey decides on the Jueschke #123 box stamp. I thought he was BSing me until I checked out his maul. It is for sure a 4# maul. He stamped out the front, back, and flap of a 17" wide briefcase in one sitting, and 2-4 hits per impression. I putzed around the shop cutting some little stuff, read the new Shoptalk, sewed a little, and watched the action. He can swing a 4 pounder for a few hours without a break. :showoff:

Harvey, Maybe we shouldn't bring up my dividers, alright?.

Sorry guys this is off topic but I have heard of this "shoptalk" and was curious if someone could give some info on where to look into it.

Thanks

I had the opportunity to see Harvey's briefcase last night. WOW! Wait till he gets the pictures posted. Harvey did a fantastic job on it! I am sure his son will be thrilled when he gets it.
