I have not made a sheath for someone else before and was asked to make 4 for a custom knife maker. I know how to make the basic sheath, but was curious if anyone could enlighten me on welt (or would that be a gusset?) design and maybe post some photos. (I am a visual type learner). I have always preferred some sort of snap to keep the knife in place, but thought it might be a good thing to know and practice on some of his custom knives to come up with some good sheaths to send him.

Thanks!

Everything you ever wanted to know about sheaths (mabye more)

http://knifenetwork.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=16

welt depends on sheath design, you can have a full welt that totally surrounds the blade, or just along the edge on sheaths that are made from one folded piece of leather. The main point of the welt is to protect the stitching from being cut, though in full welt type sheaths it also makes room for the blade between the front and back of the sheath. There is a lot of discussion on the forum I linked to above about snaps and retention. If you are doing custom knives you will want to countersink the back of the snap and glue a little plug of leather over it to keep from scratching up the knife.

Kewl, thanks! I joined up over there and took a look around. I already had my thoughts about the welt and knew why it was there, just was never too sure about where it needed to be skived, etc. As I stated earlier, I just wet formed all my personal sheaths or used a folded style and some sort of strap retention to hold them in place. I found out a while back what a rivet can do to a nice knife, so I always cover them now. :)

I played around with some leather last night on one of the knives and came up with a pretty nice sheath, just needed to get some more info on the welt, so I could finish it up properly.

Thanks again!

If you search "welt" there was one thread where Chuck Burrows goes into detail about skiving welts, retention, etc. Too bad there is no leather group in the area, I am just across the river from you.

Yeah, that is too bad. I would love to get together with others in this area and share ideas, tips, tricks and other things.
