frank207 Report post Posted August 21, 2009 Hi, This may seem like a strange request but I went to a yard sale this week where one of the owners was a stone carver and apparently quite good. They are elderly and selling their property which includes a very, very large building which he said was his work shop which I might get into next week if he gets it organized. I asked if he had and leather equipmnet/supplies and he said he had a splitter(small) and some sort of Hand cranked, jig saw TYPE machine that is used to cut shapes in thick leather. I hoping he has small sewing machine. Anyway, My basic question is: If he has any leather sides/pieces laying around ,what should I look for in determining if the leather is still usable? I have a feeling if he does it will probably be quite old. Any comments, suggestions will be appreciated, I have no idea what he may have, but the man is apparently quite artistic in different mediums. As Always, Thanks Frank
Somawas Report post Posted August 21, 2009 The guy is a stone carver, right? Ask if he has the drawings for azny of the tombstones for any of the cows. That would help to date it.
rdb Report post Posted August 21, 2009 Old leather tears, just like paper. Take a thin edge somewhere on the hide, and try to tear. It won't take much if it's old, so don't rip the guys stuff in half...lol. I envy you going into the old shop. Hope there's some treasures there for you.
