Vinegaroon vs. Gun Finish?

Recommended Posts

I figured I better ask before I use it. Anyone ever experienced any adverse affects from a vinegarooned holster on your guns finish? I just made up a batch and I love the results as far as the color, but I don't want to screw up a gun with my little science experiment. Thanks, Tony

Yes, vinegaroon could damage a gun's finish. That's why it's important to either use well brewed 'roon, or neutralize the holster after coloring. My batch has been sitting under the sink so long that I really don't have any vinegar smell to it anymore, and that means that the acetic acid (vinegar) has been pretty much fully reduced (used up). I haven't seen any adverse effects once it's at this stage. However, a fresh batch may still have active acid which is why some folks recommend a baking soda bath to fully neutralize the acid.

Just to make sure, I seal the inside of the holster with resolene before final assembly.

Thanks Twinoaks. I figured as much. I think I will neutralize it and finish the inside. I usually finish the inside anyway. Thanks again.
