cleaning and caring for leather

Recommended Posts

Hello smile.gif my name is Bodvar and I am new to this forum and to leather working for that mater (only about 6 months so far) and was hoping you all could help me with this. I want to know what the best way to clean and preserve leather armor is. I have some veg-tanned, oil tanned, chromium tanned (which I think is just the same as oil tanned but not sure) water hardened veg-tanned, and wax hardened veg-tanned. I would like to know the best way to clean and preserve each different type. Some people have told me saddle soap is good but it can be really harsh on the leather and dry it out to much. Others say neetsfoot oil is good for preserving it but not good on hardened leather as it will soften it up. Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Bodvar

Hiya Bodvar,

I found this site a few days ago that deals mostly with old and new veg-tanned leather. The site says it's cool to link to it so I hope it's ok to post. I thought there was some good reading there.

Hey Joe thanks for the link. That was really informative. It answered a lot of my questions.
