so i bit on the sale leather unlimited had going on and bought a black finished shoulder(7-8oz, 10sqft) for holsters. its extremely firm and im almost afraid of cracking it. will casing it then working it make it more malible(sp?) or is it going to be this hard all the way thru. next time ill wait til tandy gets shoulders on sale.

Dyed leather always feels firmer. When making a folded holster it's always a good idea to case the are of the fold.

Casing it should help. Do a test strip first to see if there are any problems and what is possible with the leather.

thanks for the replies, when i have a bit of time i will give that a try. holsters will be pancake style, formed, and a few belts. thanks again.

Depending upon the dye used, veg-tanned cowhide can be somewhat difficult to case. Some dyes inhibit water absorption. Soaking for 10 to 20 minutes in warm water can help.
