Original Wyoming knife as a head knife

I recently bought an "Original Wyoming Knife" ( http://wyomingknife.com/knives.htm , scroll down ) to try in lieu of a head knife, which I don't have.

Wow.

I've been cutting my leather with shears / scissors and/or x-acto knives. With a tremendous amount of frustration, of course.

This knife snips right through. Nice thing? It is <$30.

I'm not saying this replaces a head knife -how could I, I don't have one? But it might be a good addition to your arsenal of cutting tools.

A standard 'utility knife' as found at Home Depot, Lowe's, WalMart, Ace Hardware, etc., (see this link: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?keyword=utility%2Bknife&langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

is readily available and much less expensive than $30. HD carries an ergonomically designed utility knife for just under $4. Blades are inexpensive and readily available also. Strop the blade occassionally and it will do the job. My mentor only uses a utility knife and he has been doing leather for 60 or so years.

Good point; I was attracted by the curve on this blade, however. I used it tonight for the first time, and was very pleased with the results.

The utility knives look like they'd do a great job. I guess it just goes to show you there is no one perfect way of doing anything

I also plan to carry the wyoming knife in the woods during hunting season and hope to use it for its intended purpose, too.
