First Tooling Lessons Now Garments

I learnt tooling and such and comfortable where i am at. I got sewing machine now and want to learn garment making, specifically corsets.

I have contacted local people in BC to help and assist and am met with seeming anomosity and resistance.

I need to seriously build confidence and how to do some basic things like seems and folds and so on....any words of advice...and BTW i do not do well learning pragmatic things through instructions of reading books.
