Need Some Input

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

here is a carving that I did on some scrap leather before doing it on a piece that I have in mind.

I would greatly appreciate a critique on this piece.

The errors that I found on it are:

hair on the body is too long and in the wrong direction

halo effect on the background

horn tip on the far side is too low

area around nose needs hair too

Thanks,

Moe G

I couldn't tell too much from your photo as it was too dark. Did you dye it black or is that the way it came out? From what I could see, you have already mentioned what was wrong, so I won't say anything more about that. The ram's eye looked really good, but I couldn't tell if you put hair marks inside the ear. Paul Burnett has a tutorial of a ram's head for sale on his web site. You might want to look into getting that and see how he does his ram. His web site is: http://paintingcow.com/content/. His figure carving lessons are really good and will teach a lot.

I'm not saying your work is bad, it actually looks really good, but as you know, it needs a little help. Maybe Clay B will get into this and give you more help, as he seems to know animals. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Joet,

I just downloaded his wildlife studies for the ram and kestrel. Lots of good info in there.
