Members Clockwork Posted May 1, 2010 Members Report Posted May 1, 2010 I'm pretty new to leatherworking, and at this point I have no experience with dyes or stains. I'm currently working on a project that involves lightweight upholstery leather, and I was wondering if dying the leather would cause it to stiffen up, or change its behavior. I need it to stay flexible and supple, and I would hate to accidentally ruin it by trying to achieve a specific color. Thanks, I really appreciate your time. Quote
Ambassador abn Posted May 1, 2010 Ambassador Report Posted May 1, 2010 CW, leather dye is intended for vegetable-tanned leather -- i.e., the pale, stiff variety of leather. Upholstery leather is chrome-tanned and pre-finished, which unfortunately means you're stuck with the color you have now. Maybe someone here has experimented with dyeing upholstery leather, but I can't imagine the results were very good... Quote
