Leather For Spur Straps

I've made quite a few spur straps but always single ply. I usually use a 9/10 ounce for mine. I'd like to try making a pair that are doubled and stitched but I'm not sure what weight of leather to use for the top or the latigo on the inside. Any advice would be nice.
