Hi, all,

I'm experimenting with coloring leather and am curious about "spirit dyes" or "spirit tints" - for example, the kind Peter Main uses. I can find the water-based colors at Tandy - but I'd like to find the professional colors, the non-water-based colors.

What are some brand names or sources I can look for?

Thanks very much,

Julia

Hi Julia

I almost always use Fiebing's dyes, and I prefer to use the Professional Oil Dyes, since they don't seem to dry out the leather as much as plain spirit dyes. Other folk prefer Angelus dye (which I've never tried), but I've no doubt you'll get responses from them as well!

Fiebing's and Angelus are pretty much the two main names in spirit dyes.....at least, those are the ones that are the most available, and spoken of frequently on this forum. AFAIK, Peter uses spirit dyes and dilutes/thins them to get the shading he wants. The 'drying out' of the leather can and should be addressed in the conditioning phase of finishing the leather.
