acox4t4 Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 Hi there, I went to Tandy Leather for the 50% off one item sale yesterday and was going to get a Tandy Splitter. Does anyone have any information to share on how good they work?? The manager of the store told me that it wouldn't do good on Roo Hide which is something that I want to cut... Was just wanting to hear from more people on what they think of the product, not everyday you can get it for 50 % off so would hate to pass up a bargan if it actually would work for what I'm wanting to work with which is Roo, Rawhide for the most part. Thanks Annette Quote
Moderator bruce johnson Posted December 29, 2010 Moderator Report Posted December 29, 2010 I had one of their Pro models on a similar deal. If you leave the depth pointer on the one I had, it would split down to about 4 oz before it bottomed out, so it wouldn't do much on roo. I took the pointer off for lighter leathers. Mine was off and split a little more off to the right than the left side of the roller. I sold mine to guy who was a pretty handy machinist and he got it right. I got my money out of it. The manager sounds right, there are other choices that are better for what you are wanting to do. acox4t4 Posted December 30, 2010 Author Report Posted December 30, 2010 Thank you Bruce for your reply. Do you or anyone else know of a good lower cost one that is sold or that someone can make that would work good for roo, and at some time rawhide. I tried to make one myself and it didn't work very good. I've got a cutter/beveler coming from Beven from austie land. Will hopefully arrive soon. So just need to get me a splitter that will work good for me and then I think I'll be set up. Thanks. Quote
Moderator bruce johnson Posted December 30, 2010 Moderator Report Posted December 30, 2010 Some of the braiding bar tools have a splitter that works pretty well for strings. I have sold a couple Chase pattern splitters to braiders too. With the top and bottom rollers, the strings stay pretty consistant. For the price of a good Chase splitter though, you can buy a string cutter/beveler/splitter.
