Leather Buttons To Fasten Your Chaps

Recommended Posts

Hey I'm working on a pair of my batwings and I just had chap snaps for fastening the legs and I want to put in leather buttons. The problem I'm running up against is how to make the slot for the button to go through. My buttons are 14oz saddle skirting and 1 1/2'' diameter. If anybody has made any like this I'd like to here how you did it or if there's some good ideas they'd be much appreciated.

Best Regards;Wyndelle Schartner

I would start with a hole punch, 3/16" to 1/4" diameter, then follow with a knife or chisel cut to the slot. Look at a button hole in a thick coat to get the idea. The chisel will make a more accurate cut than the knife. It avoids the possibility of a slip with the sharp knife, making your slot too long.

@ Steve. Thanks for the suggestion,I think it would work but I was hoping to have the button come through the chap body so you could see it, it would replace the concho then to.

@ Sundance. Thanks Sundance, do you think that the hole would get to big and when the button was put through and pulled snug it would pull the leather enough to reveal the button whole?!? I'll try some on some scraps and see.
