Members 19th century bootmaker Posted May 14, 2011 Members Report Posted May 14, 2011 I have 2 Bradbury machines. The 1878 sews perfectly. The 1885(?)is much larger with a smaller bobbin and its all there, but I can't get the walking foot to walk. I have played with the stitch length ajustment at the wheel and wondered if it was the cam or if the screw was too short from wear. Anyone know why this problem is happening? Quote

Is the cam turning with the shaft or has the screw come loose? The foot lifts via a spring but the bar that drives the walking motion is positively driven. Compare the two machines as it is possible the top of the bar has fatigued and cracked off. The two machines should be similar so try comparing what is going on with the working machine and what isn't happening on the other. I am going off what happens with a Bradbury clone but they are very similar in operation. Quote

The screw which adjusts the stitch length at the cam is fine, but the length stays the same ie. just punches the same hole over and over. The bar is fine. The 1878 which works has a cone which lifts the foot. The 1885 does not. Thanks for the input. Quote

Are both bars moving up and down? Look at what should be happening at the head end. Post a picture of the top of the head from a couple of angles. Quote
