Members celticleather Posted July 5, 2011 Members Report Posted July 5, 2011 I'm looking for way to give shiny brass or nickel-plated brass buckles a 'satin' finish. I've played around with fine wire wool and Scotchbrite, but the result is invariably scratches - albeit very fine scratches - on the surface. I don't have the facilities to sand-blast the buckles, and wonder if anyone out there has any bright (or satin finished!) ideas. Quote
Members BIGGUNDOCTOR Posted July 5, 2011 Members Report Posted July 5, 2011 Got any rockhounds, or reloaders in the area with a tumbler? Another method would be to chemically etch them, but that could be nasty to deal with. We do some chem deburring at work, and what we use is not for the average home hobbyist. Quote
Members chrometan Posted December 2, 2011 Members Report Posted December 2, 2011 This is an ultra low cost solution: I don't know which abrasive would yield a satin finish... sand at the lowest grit, maybe moving up through aquarium gravel, ball bearings or screwdriver bits (!) as the instructable suggests. http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-Ball-Mill-in-5-Minutes/ Quote
Members Spence Posted December 2, 2011 Members Report Posted December 2, 2011 I have never tried this...yet. But it is on my list of things to try. Jax Patina. Available at craft stores like Hobby Lobby. OR http://www.jaxchemical.com/index.html If you use it, be sure to let us all know how it worked for you. Quote
