melbur1983 Report post Posted October 16, 2011 Hi, I"m very new to this, I'm wondering how do I know what type of leather to buy to make different items? Some of the things I want to make are primarily horse tack, but also belts, wallets, and purses eventually. How do I know what type of leather to get for the different things I want to make? Wishful Report post Posted October 16, 2011 Most of the items here are made with veggie tan leather of various thickness. There are many websites that will give you some good info like :http://kingsmerecrafts.com/ but this site will be a great resource. As a beginner, I would suggest getting some of the ebooks that Tandy sells on their digital library: http://www.leathercraftlibrary.com/c-79-ebooks.aspx . A few to think about: ABC's of leatherworking, the art of making cases 1,2,3 or encyclopedia of saddle making. These are very foundational books that will get you up to speed pretty quick. Chavez Report post Posted October 17, 2011 Hi Melbur, I'm also very new to the leather, but I can really recommend the Valerie Michael's "Leatherworking handbook". There's a chapter that explains different leather thickness and leather from different parts of an animal. Stohlman's books mentioned above are a must-have too
