Hi everyone!

My wife and I are working on a pair of Star Wars costumes, and the hardest part will be the leather vests. The basic pattern seems simple enough, but getting into the details with my current level of experience leaves me with lots of questions. I've done some basic small projects, but nothing to this scale or complexity. I plan to take it slow, learning as I go, and enjoy the process rather than just rushing myself to get it done.

An image of the overall outfit is here. I've found plenty of other images for specific details if they help.

My wife is making a pattern and a test garment out of fabric. Once we have that, I'll proceed to make the leather version. From what I've read, we will not be attempting to use her sewing machine with leather, so all the work will be done by hand. That leads me to my questions...

What weight and type of leather would be appropriate for this look? I found some 3 oz upholstery leather that's a pretty good color match (there's a tinge of green not really visible in the linked image), though if that's not suitable I could attempt to dye my own.

What would be the best way to do the double piping that trims the vest? I've thought about stitching both sides of each line of piping with a smaller cord running through and periodically pulling the full sized piping through, or attaching the piping to the lining, forming the leather over the piping, and then following it around with the stitching... but I really have no clue if either is a good idea or not.

I thought I had a couple of other questions, but I can't think of them at the moment.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
