cleveland Report post Posted January 19, 2012 I'd like to get a splitter and I have found an American and a Landis. I see tons of great reviews on the Landis but not a lot about the American. Is one better then the other? If so why? Thanks!
bruce johnson Report post Posted January 19, 2012 I have had both and more. The American feeds from the back and the Landis feeds from the front. The frame on the Landis is a little beefier but both are durable. The American had a pointer and scale for the adjustment and the Landis has "detent clicks" on the model 30. The click settings are nice, but I've run a bunch more through Americans and Champions and they work well too. If I had to pick between two in identical condition and same price, I'd get the Landis. Otherwise it would depend on the condition differences vs. price difference.
cleveland Report post Posted January 19, 2012 Thanks Bruce! I'm looking at the two that are on ebay right now. I have been working with the owner of the Landis and he was going to set up a buy it now for $550 shipped but about an hour before he was supposed to someone placed a bid. :-( The owner of the American is willing to do a similar offer, but I didn't want to pass up the Landis if it is that much better of a machine. http://www.ebay.com/...=item27c23ef0a3 http://www.ebay.com/...=item53eade9307 BTW, what is a reasonable price? I was thinking $600 ish? Is that realistic or am I being a bit too optimistic? Thanks again!

The Landis ended up going for $711 and the American for $482 (I bought it). I wonder why people were willing to pay $230+ more for the Landis? I would've preferred the Landis cause it's more well known but I couldn't justify the price. Andrew

Andrew I was going to bid on the American, but when I saw what they were bidding on the Landis for... well I'm not interested in getting into a bidding war. I need a splitter and will wait till the right one comes along. I'm the type of guy that will wait for months to find the right tool. Hopefully I find one here on leatherworker.net and skip the whole ebay thing. That place has screwed me as the buyer and the seller more then once. I'd be interested in knowing how the American worked out for you after you get it. Bobby

I guess the circle of people interested in crank splitters isn't terribly big. Hope you get a good deal on one. I didn't want to get into a bidding war either but I figured I'd try my luck on the American since there was only one bidder at the original price. Glade it didn't go too high. Assuming e condition turns out to be good, I think I got a decent deal on it. I'll let you know how it goes. From what I've read on this forum, they seem very comparable in function.
