karl Report post Posted June 29, 2008 you should write up a tutorial for these Thanks Anne. I've never written up a tutorial before and want to do a few more to be sure that I'm doing it decent enough to do a tutorial on one. Actually they are fun to make once you start making them, my problem is blending and mixing the colors for the proper color for the type if bird feather I am trying to depict. karl Report post Posted July 1, 2008 (edited) Cindiy, I wouldn't mind doing a tutorial, but I bought a DVD on how to make feathers and I am afraid if I tried to do that, there would be a patent or copyright infringment I'm not sure and don't wanna end up teaching leathercraft in the "Big House" LOL Karl Edited July 1, 2008 by karl
Sharpshooter Report post Posted July 25, 2008 Karl I'll tell you this for somewhat selfish reasons.... You would not be violating copyright by doing your own tutorial since the actual product, the tutorial, is YOUR WORK and not that of whoever did the DVD you learned from. Following your line of reasoning, anyone using the English language would be violating Webster's copyrite since they used all of the words in their Dictionary and have a copyright on it. Copyright protects the actual product, in this case the DVD, were you to take the DVD, and re-record it with your own label, you are using their entire work without them receiving whatever it was they required in exchange for their work (usually money). The DVD was produced to sell; in exchange for the purchase price, the purchaser can learn to make leather feathers. The seller does NOT have a right to control how that knowledge is used under a simple copyright, so if you wish to use the knowledge to develop your own tutorial or even a DVD you aren't violating their work. A copyright is not the same as a patent which protects a process or product. The selfish reason is that I want to see how that's done and since you didn't mention who made the DVD and I'm really too cheap to buy it anyway, your tutorial would be cool to check out. Corvus Report post Posted July 25, 2008 I really like the feathers, a tutorial would be great. As long as it is in your own words you would not be breeching any copyright.

A copyright is not the same as a patent which protects a process or product. Y'know, when I go to Staples to have something xeroxed so I don't have to hand trace, or (worse), cut up the article out of the magazine to glue onto cardboard, I end up fighting with the morons they hire who insist that: "because-it-is-copyrighted,-I-cannot-legally-copy-it-for-you..." I try to explain, that even though it is copyrighted, it was copyrighted for the express purpose of making copies for leathercrafters to copy so they can make copies to copy... I then propose this question: "if I own the copyright to a particular article because I sold that particular article to that particular magazine & I sold it to them with me retaining all rights except first North American Serial Rights ((and yes, btw, I have sold numerous articles to various publications, among them, Make It With Leather)), why can I not copy this article as I so choose?"... and the morons can only reply [because this is beyond their ken of understanding]...'because the magazine is copyrighted'... I had the same problem there. A customer had given me a copy of his log to carve into something. I took it to Staples to enlarge on the xerox machine and was told the same thing. Forget about explaining to the clerk - he wouldn't budge, I ended up tracing the logo and ten going back and had my tracing enlarged. Now I don't ask the clerk - just go in and used the self service machines. Ian

Ideas, techniques, and processes are not copyrightable only a particular description, explanation, or illustration of them can be copyrighted. Super job on the feathers. karl Report post Posted August 12, 2008 My fellow leather crafters, I have a few things to do this week plus my regular job but I will do a tutorial in my own words and pictures this week end if I can get my camera to take photos without blurring, and I do love to make leather feathers and also now that I am embossing several different peoples faces and animals I may do the same thing with them.
