Cleaning Oil Off Of Stamps?

Recommended Posts

We accidentally got some cooking oil on a bunch of stamps.

(I was working on the far end of the kitchen table, with my daughter and my Little-Buddy.)

What would be the best way to clean the oil off so it does not contaminate the leather workpiece, and then treat then so they don't rust.

Any kitchen degreaser would work. Though to preserve your tools as best as possible, a low / non corrosive cleaner would be best. I've been sticking with Simple Green since I bought it for another job and it's worked well. However, in a pinch, a kitchen cleaner might work if you have something designed for metals.

Think it'd be safe to run them through the dishwasher in the utensil basket?

Really need to get the garage cleaned up so I can work out there!

Depends on the quality of the stamps. If we're talking solid high end stamps, maybe. The cheaper Crafttools aren't solid metal. They're plated, with nickle I believe. So a high power wash like that could chip them.

If you want to try some solvents, either acetone or MEK will work very well and leave no residue (available at any hardware store in the paint section) Otherwise, DAWN liquid dishwashing soap cuts any oil I've ever tried with it!

Update: utensil basket of the dishwasher worked great, no plating flaking off.
