Members NickP Posted May 21, 2012 Members Report Posted May 21, 2012 Hi i'm as new as new gets to leather working but i'm getting into sass so i thought i would like to try making my own rig .Could some one tell me which thread or material i should use to hand stitch my belt and holster thanks Quote
Contributing Member TwinOaks Posted May 23, 2012 Contributing Member Report Posted May 23, 2012 For hand stitching your rig, I recommend using waxed linen thread. It's strong enough to hold up well and available in small quantities from local sources. You'll want to use an awl...but not the "stitching awl", and two needles. If you don't have it, I suggest picking up Stohlman's "The Art of Hand Stitching". Quote Mike DeLoach Esse Quam Videri (Be rather than Seem) "Don't learn the tricks of the trade.....Learn the trade." Contributing Member UKRay Posted June 7, 2012 Contributing Member Report Posted June 7, 2012 I use waxed linen too, but also like bonded nylon thread as it seems a bit easier to work with in the thicker sizes and doesn't tend to go so 'hairy'. Tippman sell a good thread for use in their hand sewing machines. Nice stuff and you can seal the end of your stitching with a hot knife (or a lighter) to stop it coming unraveled. Just make sure you put all the fires out! Ray Quote "Some mornings, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps" Ray Hatley www.barefootleather.co.uk
