Hi i'm as new as new gets to leather working but i'm getting into sass so i thought i would like to try making my own rig .Could some one tell me which thread or material i should use to hand stitch my belt and holster thanks

For hand stitching your rig, I recommend using waxed linen thread. It's strong enough to hold up well and available in small quantities from local sources. You'll want to use an awl...but not the "stitching awl", and two needles. If you don't have it, I suggest picking up Stohlman's "The Art of Hand Stitching".

I use waxed linen too, but also like bonded nylon thread as it seems a bit easier to work with in the thicker sizes and doesn't tend to go so 'hairy'. Tippman sell a good thread for use in their hand sewing machines. Nice stuff and you can seal the end of your stitching with a hot knife (or a lighter) to stop it coming unraveled. Just make sure you put all the fires out!
