Bobby hdflame Report post Posted June 6, 2012 I want to get a new rawhide maul. Right now I'm using a 1 lb rawhide hammer but I want to try a maul. Do you like the round type or tapered? Why? What weight do you like? I'm thinking 2 lb. What brand, and where to purchase? I'm looking at this one: http://www.wrising.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=7 Thanks for the guidance in advance.
ironhead13 Report post Posted June 6, 2012 I have two mauls. The small tandy one and the big one. The small one when I got it came with an additional rawhide head.. but I've not switched it out. The handle started to fall apart when I tried... so I figured before I got angry and destroyed stuff (common issue!) I left it alone. Personally I dig the small one, it does all the work for me. I use the big one on rare occasions for say a large stamp, setting snaps etc... I have rawhide mallets but do not use them, there just for looks I suppose (which they were given to me..). I don't tool much at all...so my opinion isn't worth much. But, for what it's worth, "I don't tool much, but when I do I prefer the small tandy maul. Keep tapping my friends"
Cyberthrasher Report post Posted June 6, 2012 Man, there was just a whole discussion on this up on one of the top sections a couple weeks ago, but I can't remember what the consensus was. I do remember that 1 lb seemed to be recommended for all around work. I'll see if I can find a link to that post. If I can't find it, you might try posting up there too so more people see it outside of the motorcycle group.

Looks like I found the place to get my maul, now I just have to decide on which one! The Bear Man really makes some nice mauls. I'll be ordering a couple of custom mauls from him. Take a look at some of what he makes here. http://tinyurl.com/BearMauls His basic mauls start at $75 and go to just over $100 for a super duper custom. I think that's a good deal for such quality work!
Cyberthrasher Report post Posted June 6, 2012 Yeah, I've had my eyes on some of his stuff. I just can't justify the price right now. It's worth it, but I have a lot of other stuff I need to buy first.
