Holsters: Measurements?

Hello friends,

So I was hoping I could get some confirmation or correction from ya'll regarding a thought I just had. Now this may be common sense to some, but to people like me, its just another detail to be considered. I haven't been making holsters long, so I'm sort of discovering new ideas as I go.

I've been making shoulder holster rigs. And last night while layin in bed I got an idea. Now I've just been making my rigs according to pattern, meaning that I come out with pretty much the same setup each time.

Now if I come across a customer with huge shoulders, I may have a bit of a problem. So my idea is, if I got measurements of the diameter of the customers shoulders, and the measurement shoulder to shoulder. Would that be the measurements needed to know how big I need my harness's to be to guarantee that it will fit?

So far I haven't run into anyone so big that my setup won't work. Personally I can wear the setup snug with just a shirt on, or i can pile up on sweaters and a jacket, loosen the rig a big, and wear it snug with all the clothing. But if the jolly green giant comes along, I might need to consider getting a bit more "custom" with my custom holsters.

The photo below will give you a visual as to why I feel these measurements might help.

Yes, you should be able to build the harness with just the measurments provided, but I wouldn't narrow it down to just two measurements. The more the merrier. To be safe, I would probably sketch out a diagram of the harness and label the measurements, "A", "B", etc. and ask the customer to provide these measurements. I've built harnesses for customers this way. Mine is a little different because the gun sits at the middle of the torso. I asked the customer to provide measurements from the center of the chest over one sholder to the middle of the back and then the dimension around his torso. Like I said ours are different, but I believe you can do this with the dimensions provided plus the adjustability that you are building into the piece.
