917 Report post Posted October 25, 2012 Hi everyone, I've some questions about how to split down a piece of leather evenly. I have a Nippy leather skiving machine and from some books i've read, it says you can split down a piece of leather using those machine. However, no matter how many times and what ways I've tried (include changing to a wider foot for the machine), the leather was never evenly skived down. I've attached a photo of it. From it, you can clearly see the uneven leather marks. Is it because i've done it in the wrong way? Or the book is wrong, which means i can't split down a leather using the nippy skiving machine? If the book is wrong, then are there any good machines out there in the market which can help split down leather evenly? I only know about the Weaver Machine. Its good but expensive. Thank you
ramrod Report post Posted October 27, 2012 oh, not good. did you feed it all at once....or just skive a small amount at a time?
917 Report post Posted October 27, 2012 Lets say the leather needed to be thinned down is 10cm and the foot for the skiving machine is 3cm. I had the leather run through the entire foot for 4 times to ensure the whole piece of leather gets thinned down evenly. I'm not quite sure does this mean i skived it all at once or small amount at a time, as i did feed the leather through the machine for several times. And at the same time, the leather was fed through the entire foot all at once (instead of a small section of the foot) during skiving.
