GampasShop Report post Posted August 12, 2008 I do some woodworking and have a lot of tools, even some of my grandpa's who passed away in 1967. Anyway I am doing a CD case with curved corners and I needed to lay out the area to do my basketweave. Well I go to my woodshop to grab the wing dividers and then get to thinking (I know, its bad for you). Had to dig a while but I find one of my grandpa's old tools and used it instead of the wing dividers to make my border and then last night used it again for the lace holes. The tool is a General Tools "Butt Gauge". This tool would have been from the days of laying out and installing your own door hinges. I looked on the General Tools website and they do NOT offer it any longer. It scribes a great line in cased leather and it also worked pretty good on the finished leather last night for the lace line. I will get pics either tonight or tomorrow and post here. Fritzy Report post Posted August 13, 2008 I think that's very similar to a mortise gauge that I use for laying out joinery. There's several styles, but the idea is that it has a fence that will allow you to run a blade, scraper, or pencil along a workpiece, parallel to the edge. If you do some googling, you can also find plans to make your own. I like the wheel marking gauge by veritas. Cheers! -Fritzy
GampasShop Report post Posted August 13, 2008 I had seen the wheel type you are talking about on the Woodcraft site and then I remembered having this old thing sitting in the shop.
Srigs Report post Posted August 17, 2008 I use a half moon wood cutting chisel for making top and bottom slot holes and cut the leather in between the ends. I'm sure there is a ton more uses for older wood working tools and I would like to here what other people use.
