dkvv Report post Posted December 30, 2012 I am wondering what you think is the best leather for falconry gloves. It must be strong , no pinching from the claws , and on the same time very souple. Most of my gloves i made are from cow leather , But most glove makers use elk or deer leather. Do you have some answers ? Johan
REDTAILHAWK Report post Posted January 7, 2013 Most gloves I've seen are just a fairly thick suede. With usually a double thickness on the index finger and a little farther up. I imagine elk would be fine weight wise unless it is thin. Deer might be too thin. But it would all depend on what bird you are handling. Deer would be ok for a kestrel or a bird that size. Goshawk or red-tail I think I'd go with the elk or cow in double thickness on the index finger. For the average bird and the leather cost, I think a thick suede cow would be fine. dkvv Report post Posted January 7, 2013 Thanks Redtailhawk, i personally use cow leather double tickness like you suggested.. But its always wise to see around and learning from other people. Personally i am hunting with the redtailhawk, the Harris hawk and fly with some owls like the eagle owl (european. So i know how strong a good glove must be.
