Edge Burnishing Kip

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Hoping someone can give me a bit of advice on finishing the edges on thin kip leather (1.2/1.4 mm) as I'm ordering some to use for making a wallet and some other bits. Is there a particular technique to achieving good edges with a very thin leather like this?

I've been experimenting a bit with a sample and found it difficult to burnish using canvas as it's so thin and flexible. As it's difficult not to distort the edge when burnishing by hand, would it be a good idea to use a dremel burnisher (as made by one of the members here http://www.leatherburnishers.com)

or

would a soldering iron with one of these tips be effective? http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4852a48a5a

Also, as I'm planning to buy a few more tools, is it worth buying a fine edge shave? I know Vergez Blanchard do a No.0 or would a Dixon No.1 be ok? Do i even need to edge such thin leather?

Any help appreciated!

Edd

When I'm burnishing really thin leather like that I lay it flat on the marbel and just push in and down with my fingertips as flush as possable. It seams to work well for me. Good luck.
