Hi all

I've been asked to do a dog collar with the name of "GENERAL" on it, taken from the program, Dukes of Hazzard. I'm new to leather work and just about to order my first round of oil dyes this coming week so I was having a look at them and notice they don't do an orange (link below), so I was wondering what colours would I need to make the orange, and HOW do I dye the collar that colour?

http://www.leprevo.co.uk/photos/dye-chart-oil.htm

Also once I dye the collar that color orange, how do I make the carved wording Black - I'm guessing brush paint the oil on the carved letters. Is this right?

I've also notice that there is no WHITE oil dye - How do I do White? Will Acrylic paint white be ok on top of the orange dyed belt?

Any help / advice is much appreciated.

Do you have a color wheel? Red and Yellow make orange - both of which are available in dyes

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_wheel

How: The same way you dye it any other color

How do you make it black? Brush on the black dye

There is no white dye so acrylic is your only choice. Test it to make sure the white you choose will cover the orange.

Thanks Cyber,

I've only got a set of Acrylic dyes at the moment and I mixed them with an eye dropper, wasn't sure if doing the same with oil dies would work. When I got my acrylic dyes I made a sort of color wheel grid thing mixing two colors, think I'll have to do the same with the dies I get, I was just wondering as I can't afford to get all the colors just yet. Thanks for confirming that brushing on the oil paint is fine - all the videos I've seen have been with either wool or cloth. Pity about no white die, guess I'll have to try the acrylic paint.

Many thanks

For clarification as you're asking for help, there are different techniques required for Dyes and Paints. I'm pretty sure you're talking about oil DYE here, so we need to make sure we're referencing things right. Otherwise someone might give you bad advice without knowing it. Acrylics are always PAINT, DYE is never PAINT or ACRYLIC. DYE penetrates the leather and changes its color, PAINT and ACRYLIC sit on top of the leather.

Yes, I know Acrylic is paint and sits on top, and oil is a dye that soaks into the leather ( sorry just reread my post and I did say acrylic dye, I also know about "spirit" dye, which is about 1/2 the price of oil dye and everyone I've spoken with raves about the oil ones. As this is something new to me, and all i've done is tooled some bookmarks and stained them with antique stain, the oils is the next step, so I'm planning on dying the collar orange, and then the car number which is black and white border, i'm hoping to dye the name in black on the orange and then do a white border with acrylic paint as you can see in the below picture:

thanks again.

Just gotta jump in and do it. experiment and find what works. mixing the right orange will take some work, so you'll have plenty of scrap around to try out the different techniques.
