Went looking for the size of the set screw that Tandy uses in their swivel knives, wanted to switch from a slotted screw style to an Allen head style to make it easier to adjust.

What I found to my surprise is that it is a metric screw, size is 3mm x 4 mm long x 0.5 pitch.

Didn't find this info on the web, called a couple of Tandy stores, finally just went to the HW store and started guessing.

Besides changing out the screws in the swivel knives, I also replaced the screw in the Keen Edge sharpener with a socket head screw so that I could tighten and loosen the tool by hand. Since the screw is not in the way, no reason to have to use a screwdriver or Allen wrench now unless things get stuck.

Really?! I never would have even guessed this. I wonder if this is only with the newer ones, since I would have placed my bets on the set screws being 8-32. Not 100% positive on it, but I think that's what the older ones were using.

I guess it really pays to have both Metric and SAE thread pitch gauges for just such occasions.

Like you, I'd assumed SAE would be the default and found an earlier leatherworker.net posting that listed 8-32 as the right size.

So... assuming that anything that sounds right and is on the internet is correct, I went and bought some without checking further. Oops!

The two Tandy knives I have are about 2 years old.
